Island Packet - 12/6/2022

Dec. 6—The unclaimed cremains of nine veterans from the coroner's offices in both Charleston and Beaufort counties will be laid to rest in a ceremony Friday at the Beaufort National Cemetery, according to the Beaufort County Coroner's Office.

The cremains, including eight veterans from the Charleston County Coroner's Office and one from Beaufort County, will be laid to rest in a service at 11 a.m., said Beaufort County Chief Deputy Coroner Debbie Youmans. The service will have full military honors for the veterans and is open to the public.

All cremains have been identified, Youmans said. Additional information like names and when the veterans died was not immediately available.

The national cemetery in Beaufort is one of three national cemeteries in the state overseen by the Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration. The Administration looks after 151 national cemeteries across the U.S. and Puerto Rico and about 34 soldiers' lots and monuments including the national cemetery in Beaufort.
